Loungewear is in but office sarnies are out in the cold

“Looking at which items have been added or discarded from the government’s inflation basket gives a real insight into how our lifestyles have changed during lockdown,” said Danni Hewson finance analyst at AJ Bell.

“The inclusion of hand weights and smart watches highlight the nations desire to keep fit despite gyms being closed, and the addition of hand sanitiser won’t be a surprise to anyone.

“Nor will the fact that canteen sandwiches don’t cut the mustard this year, with homeworking making the kitchen fridge a more likely source for a snack and a veg smoothie.  And, of course, there’s the appearance of loungewear on the list, though video conferencing often means its sported from the waist down only.

“What is interesting is the fact that electric and hybrid vehicles haven’t qualified, until now.  Perhaps it’s our desire to go greener or perhaps its connected to reduced commuting and increased savings among those lucky enough to be able to work from home.”
