What you'll need

Your National Insurance number – you'll find this on your National Insurance card, a benefit letter, payslip or P60.

Your bank details – so we can verify your account.

Your employer's details.

Your debit card details – if you want to put cash in your SIPP.

Details of an existing pension – if you want to transfer it to your SIPP.

Before you apply, just remember:

  • SIPPs are a type of pension suitable for investors comfortable making their own investment decisions. If you’re not sure you are, please contact a financial adviser.
  • The value of your investments can go down as well as up, and you could lose money as well as make it.
  • How you’re taxed will depend on your circumstances, and pension and tax rules can change.
  • Any money you pay in will be held as cash in your SIPP until an investment option is selected.

What you need to know about SIPPs

  • Once money is in a pension, it can’t normally be accessed until the ‘normal minimum pension age’, set by the government.
  • This minimum pension age is 55 and is due to increase to 57 from April 2028.
  • We’ll claim basic rate tax relief (20%) from HMRC on money you pay into your SIPP yourself.
  • We’ll pay this tax relief to your SIPP when we receive it from HMRC. This could be between 8 and 12 weeks after the original payment was made.
  • You’ll need to claim any higher rate tax relief from HMRC directly.
  • The AJ Bell SIPP isn’t a workplace pension, but your employer can contribute to it. Employer contributions will be paid gross - there's no tax relief claimed by us.
  • Most providers now offer you a ‘standard’ pension investment option to help you get started. Ours is the AJ Bell Pension Builder fund, which you’ll find out more about during the application process.
