How do I see a share price and is it guaranteed?

Answer

To find out the current price of a share, just search for the company name or its EPIC on our website, or use our stock screener. You can also see a share price from within your account. Just log in, click 'Deal' and search for the share.

From your 'My Account' screen, you'll also see the current price of investments you hold. Just click on an account to be taken to its portfolio page and you’ll see the current price of each investment in the 'Price' column.

Will I always get a quote when I try to place a deal?

You'll receive an online quote for the vast majority of deals. Whether you get an online quote for shares can depend on the investment you’re trying to buy or sell. It can also depend on the liquidity or volume of shares dealt each day on the exchange.

However, if your order is for a relatively high value in a mid- or small-cap company, you may not always get a quote. You might instead get a quote outside the current market buy or sell price (this is known as depth pricing).

Periods of high volatility – for example, after a major news event or geopolitical shock – can also impact the availability of quotes.

During these periods, there may be a delayed or reduced window of providing a quote, as market auctions adjust to find a ‘fair’ price for both buyers and sellers of an investment.

The availability of quotes may also be impacted by the timing and volume of market auctions taking place. In highly volatile periods, auctions become more common, and the availability of quotes may be impacted.

Online quotes state the best price available for the investment at that time. The price is based on the size of orders on the exchange order book. Before you accept an order, please have a look at the quoted price and make sure you’re happy with it.

Am I guaranteed the quoted price when I place a deal?

Share quotes are normally available for 15 seconds when you place a deal online. After this, you need to request a new quote. We continue to check for a better price while your deal is being placed – if we find one, then you will get the better price.

There are instances where share prices may dramatically change when receiving a quote. At this point you may need to request a new quote.

What do I do if there is no online quote when I try to place a deal?

Sometimes, for example, when the market is volatile, your quote may become unavailable. This means you need to request a new one. If no online quote is available, please call our Dealing Services team on 0345 54 32 600.
