IN BRIEF: Vodafone and AST Spacemobile announce EU satellite centre

Vodafone Group PLC - Berkshire, England-based telecommunications provider - Announces new satellite operations centre with Texas-based satellite manufacturer AST SpaceMobile Inc. The centre will be located in Germany, near either Munich or Hannover. The agreement follows the establishment of the two companies’ satellite joint venture, SatCo, a space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by everyday smartphones.

Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile said the centre’s purpose is to provide ‘mobile broadband in underserved areas and support emergency services and disaster relief agencies’, as well as boost Europe’s ‘digital sovereignty’, which the EU defines as its ‘ability to act independently in the digital world’. The planned constellation will include a ’command switch’ feature to ‘support European oversight and security’.
