Filtronic wins over PS1 million to develop next-generation amplifier

Filtronic PLC on Wednesday said it has been awarded over £1 million in funding by the UK Space Agency to develop a Ka-band solid-state power amplifier.

The £1.2 million award was won through the UK Space Agency’s national space innovation programme, a UK government initiative designed to support high potential innovation development in order to boost investment to the UK space sector.

The Sedgefield, England-based maker of advanced micro electronics said the 550-watt next-generation amplifier enables a transition from older travelling wave tube amplifier technology.

Filtronic said the amplifier targets the Ka-band frequency, which it said will ‘underpin many of the high throughput Satcom services expected to shape the industry over the next decade.’

Chief Executive Nat Edington said: ‘This award reflects the strength of our innovation pipeline and our place in the UK’s space ecosystem. The 550W Ka-Band SSPA is a significant step change in solid-state performance, offering leading linear power in a TWTA-compatible form factor.

‘It will enable operators to transition from travelling wave tube systems with reduced operating expense and enhanced reliability, helping to support more sustainable and future-ready satellite networks.’

Shares in Filtronic rose 1.7% to 135.32 pence on Wednesday afternoon in London.
