Heathrow check-in evacuated over possible hazardous materials incident

Heathrow’s Terminal 4 check-in area was closed and evacuated Monday evening as firefighters responded to a ‘possible hazardous materials incident’, the London Fire Brigade said in a statement.

‘Terminal 4 check-in has been closed and evacuated while emergency services respond to an incident,’ Heathrow, the UK’s main international airport, said on social media.

The fire brigade said its crews were assessing the scene at Heathrow, which is one of the world’s busiest air hubs, and passengers were urged not to travel to the terminal.

Part of the terminal was ‘evacuated as a precaution whilst firefighters respond,’ said the fire service, which was first called to the scene at around 1700 local time (1600 GMT).

The UK’s National Rail network said in a statement on X that its trains were ‘unable to call’ at the terminal, southwest of London, as a result.

Heathrow said that ‘all other terminals are operating as normal’.
