Ireland annual inflation eases to 3.4% in June - CSO

Consumer price inflation in Ireland eased slightly in June, though housing and education costs continued to drive price pressures, data from the Central Statistics Office showed on Thursday.

The consumer price index rose 3.4% in the 12 months to June, slowing from annual inflation of 3.6% in May.

Excluding energy and unprocessed food, consumer prices increased 2.9% year-on-year.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.3% in June, following a 0.1% decline in May.

The largest annual price increases were recorded in Education Services, up 8.9%, Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels, up 7.3%, Clothing & Footwear, up 7.0%, and Insurance & Financial Services, up 5.7%.

Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance was the only category to record an annual decline, edging down 0.1%.

In monthly terms, Recreation, Sport & Culture recorded the largest increase, rising 4.3% on higher package holiday prices, while Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels increased 0.6%, mainly due to higher rents.

The largest monthly declines were in Clothing & Footwear, down 0.9%, and Transport, down 0.8%, reflecting lower fuel prices that were partly offset by higher air fares.

The harmonised index of consumer prices, the European Union measure of inflation, rose 3.2% in the 12 months to June, easing from 3.5% in May.
