Metlen Energy teams with Karatzis for battery energy storage system

Metlen Energy & Metals PLC on Thursday said it has struck a partnership with Karatzis Group for a battery energy storage system in Thessaly, Greece.

The duo will develop a joint-venture, in which Athens-based aluminium producer and electricity generator Metlen will own 49% and Karatzis the other 51%.

The asset will be the ‘largest standalone storage unit planned to date in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe’.

Karatzis is a producer of netting products and silage films, which can be used in renewable energy, private aviation, and hospitality. It is based in Crete.

‘The partnership builds on the existing cooperation between the two Companies in the sale and absorption of green energy, which since August 2024 has involved the implementation of a portfolio of solar stations with a total capacity of 262MW in the same region,’ Metlen added.

Metlen Energy shares rose 2.3% to €46.90 in London on Thursday afternoon.
