Senior joins Dutch hydrogen aircraft powertrain project

Senior PLC on Monday said it has joined a Dutch-led consortium developing a zero-emissions hydrogen powertrain for regional aircraft.

The engineering group said it will participate in the Hydrogen Aircraft Powertrain & Storage System, or HAPSS, programme, the largest project within the Netherlands’ government-backed ’Aviation in Transition’ initiative.

HAPSS, led by Conscious Aerospace, has secured €73 million in funding from the Dutch National Growth Fund via the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management.

The project aims to develop and certify a liquid hydrogen propulsion system, including plans to retrofit a Dash 8-300 regional aircraft with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain.

Senior will contribute through its new innovation centre in South Wales, focusing on the design and manufacture of heat exchangers and fluid-conveyance components needed to cool the full propulsion system.

The company will work within the consortium’s Thermal Management System subgroup, drawing on its long-standing expertise in fluid conveyance and thermal management products.

Launie Fleming, president of Senior’s Aerospace division, said the programme represented ‘an excellent opportunity’ to advance aviation decarbonisation technologies.

Shares in Senior were down 0.4% at 185.80 pence in London on Monday morning.
