Shell sizes up damage after fire at Qatar gas facility

Shell PLC on Thursday said it was assessing the damage after a fire at one of its liquefied natural gas plants in Qatar.

The London-based fuel major attributed the fire at Pearl GTL to an attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City on Wednesday evening. The blaze ‘was rapidly extinguished’, according to Shell and ‘all staff on site are safe’.

‘The situation is under control,’ the company added.

‘We are currently assessing any potential damage to Pearl GTL and working with QatarEnergy and the relevant authorities to understand the damage to the wider Ras Laffan Industrial City facilities.’

LNG production in Qatar has been suspended since early March due to the conflict triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which has led to weeks of retaliatory airstrikes by Iran across the Middle East.

State-owned operator QatarEnergy invoked the Force Majeure clause on March 4, in order to protect itself from penalties and breach of contract claims related to shutting down production. Over the past few years, the country has signed a string of LNG deals with the likes of TotalEnergies SE, Eni Spa and China’s Sinopec.

Shell shares fell 0.1% to 3,456.50 pence on Thursday morning in London.
