Smith & Nephew launches knee cartilage repair implant in Europe
Smith & Nephew PLC on Tuesday announced the launch of its CartiHeal Agili-C cartilage repair implant in Europe.
The Watford, England-based medical technology company said the implant will initially be introduced in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, with other countries expected to follow.
The CartiHeal implant is designed to repair cartilage, restore bone and relieve pain. It is composed of aragonite, a naturally occurring form of calcium carbonate, and acts as a biphasic scaffold.
Results from a trial published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, found that the implant resulted in higher overall Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores than the surgical standard of care at all time points up to 60 months.
Joaquin Lasso, Smith & Nephew's Senior Vice President & General Manager of Sports Medicine International, says: "Smith & Nephew is committed to advancing technologies that address meaningful unmet clinical needs.
"The launch of the Cartiheal Implant in Europe brings surgeons an innovative, evidence-backed solution for cartilage repair and reinforces our focus on helping patients achieve better long-term outcomes and return to their active lives."
The implant will feature at this week's International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society Summit in Porto, Portugal, from October 8 to 10.
Shares in Smith & Nephew were up 1.6% to 1,021.00 pence per share in London.
