St James's Place shares slide after report of Sovereign Wealth exit
Shares in St James's Place PLC slumped on Friday after Financial News reported that Sovereign Wealth, a large partner firm, "has decided to exit the group".
Shares in the Cirencester, Gloucestershire-based financial advice and wealth management company plunged 8.0% to 1,163.00 pence each in London on Friday, the biggest faller on the FTSE 100 which was little changed.
Financial News said that Sovereign Wealth will join advice consolidator Soderberg and Partners, where former St James's Place chief executive David Bellamy is a board member.
RBC Capital Markets noted that according to Companies House filings in 2024, Sovereign Wealth had £3.1 billion of funds under management, which based on market movements may have grown to around £3.7 billion in the first half of 2026, or 1.6% of estimated first half St James's Place group FUM.
The report by Financial News comes a day after Citywire said that a seventh partner practice had joined Quilter PLC from St James's Place.
Analysts at RBC said: "We see this as a worrying development for STJ, as Sovereign are one of the most notorious and successful firms within the broader group, one of only a handful previously known to us."
"It is the most tangible evidence to date that the pulling power of the STJ platform may be creaking post the charge changes that were enacted in summer 2025."
In August 2025, STJ implemented a major overhaul to its charging structure to provide greater transparency.
But RBC thinks the charge changes created "extra friction" for advisers at the point of sale, which "in our view this has taken away one of the key ingredients of the 'secret sauce' that helped to propel the firm to its market-leading position."
RBC said at this stage, "it's unclear to us how much of the Sovereign Wealth FUM would leave STJ, and over what time horizon."
"Our understanding previously was that one of the main reasons why STJ enjoyed high adviser retention was the difficulty in transferring client assets away from the STJ proposition. This morning's development puts a major dent in that argument."
