U?'are in', UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy affirms at NAT?meeting

 - The UK has said it feels reassured regarding the US’ commitment to NATO, amid fears that the Trump administration is looking to drastically reduce its defence involvement in Europe.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday stressed that President Donald Trump remains committed to NATO, saying that the US is ‘as active’ as it has ever been.

‘I think it was important to hear from Secretary of State Rubio that the Americans are in,’ British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on the sidelines of a meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

‘They continue to be committed to NATO, and they continue to understand the importance of NATO as an umbrella of security across the Euro-Atlantic area,’ he said, speaking alongside French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

The EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said ‘it was important for everybody to hear’ Rubio’s statement.

‘We are living in very unpredictable times, and therefore, maybe it’s good to reassure the things that seem self-evident and give the reassurance that some things are still in place,’ she said.

The Trump administration has repeatedly voiced its discontent over what it describes as unfair burden sharing within NATO, calling on European allies to increase defence spending, while making it clear that Washington’s security priorities are its own borders and the Indo-Pacific region.
