UK minister asks for competition report on Sky-ITV GBP1.6 billion deal

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy on Wednesday formally intervened in Sky UK Ltd's proposed takeover of ITV M&E Holdings Ltd, ITV PLC's media and entertainment arm.

The minister asked the Competition & Markets Authority and the British communications regulator, Ofcom, to report to her on the deal's impact by January 27.

On October 15, Nandy already said she intended to examine the £1.6 billion deal, citing concerns about freedom of expression in news media, plurality of views, and media control. She also noted the deal might impact the availability of a wide range of broadcasting and on-demand programmes throughout the UK.

ITV shares rose 1.2% to 65.80 pence on Wednesday afternoon in London.
