UPDATE: Asos "operating as normal" as it investigates cyber attack
Asos PLC on Tuesday said it is investigating activity involving third-party platforms after customers received unauthorised messages.
The online fashion retailer's stock was down 11% at 449.00 pence on Tuesday afternoon.
Asos users had that morning received a push notification titled "ASOS HACKED" in which the hackers said they had "fully compromised the Snowflake instance", Snowflake being a data management cloud service.
Operating through Snowflake is an artificial intelligence platform called Simon AI, which collects customer data, Sky News reported.
The hackers addressed their message to Asos DPO and IT, the former of which stands for data protection officer, stating: "Engage with us, or we will leak it."
This was followed by a link to a Telegram page, the PA news agency reported.
Asos on Tuesday afternoon confirmed that the unauthorised notification was sent to its customers at around 1000 BST.
"We are investigating unauthorised activity involving third-party platforms that we use to communicate with customers," Asos said. "We took immediate action to restrict access to the notification platforms and are working with our internal and external specialist advisers, as well as all relevant authorities."
It noted that some "basic personal information...may have been accessed," but said it does not believe that anyone's payment card information or account passwords were affected.
"Our website and app are operating as normal, with no current disruption to any aspects of our operations," the London-based firm continued, noting that it "has cyber security insurance with a large global provider, including business continuity insurance."
"It is too early to quantify any potential impact on trading," Asos concluded.
