I've never been good at anything endurance related, and previously scoffed at the idea of attempting a triathlon - though I'd always wanted to complete a distance event of some sort; for the personal satisfaction of achieving it. When presented with the opportunity to take part I couldn't refuse and started training up to 5 times a week in preparation for it. On the day I was a bit nervous, and completely surprised by the fun welcoming atmosphere! It was such a great day and really enjoyable to take part, I managed my target time with 15 seconds to spare, phew...

Having won a free sponsors place I ran in memory of a very good friend and triathlon training buddy Darren Hale who died the weekend before after completing the Blithfield Standard Triathlon.

I was a little nervous at the start line but the event was such a fantastic one that I enjoyed every minute of it and thought of Darren all the way round. My wife Jo and daughter Hannah were there to watch me and I was tearful at the end but really glad I did it.

Once again, the AJ Bell London Triathlon lived up to its usual high standard – it’s certainly one of my favourite events and I always enjoy competing there. I’ve been taking part on and off ever since I was 17 years old, and the sheer size and warmth of the crowd never fail to make it a special experience.
