How do I get a proof of shareholding letter?
Answer
A proof of shareholding letter, also called letter of holding, confirms that you own shares in a specific company.
You may need a letter of holding in several situations, for example if you:
- Need to demonstrate eligibility for shareholder benefits or perks offered by a company
- Apply for a loan or mortgage where your shares may be considered as assets
- Need supporting evidence when reporting dividends or capital gains for tax purposes
If you’re an AJ Bell customer, there are two ways you can ask for a letter of holding. You can either:
- Log into your account and send us a secure message
- Email dealingservices@ajbell.co.uk with your request
We’ll provide the document to you as soon as possible. Remember to allow time for the request to be processed in advance of needing the letter.
If you need proof of shareholding to attend an annual general meeting (AGM), you can request a letter of representation using the same instructions. Learn more about how to attend or vote in an AGM.
