B&M says Asda’s Atheeq Akbar will join as CFO next February

B&M European Value Retail PLC on Wednesday named Asda Stores Ltd’s finance executive Atheeq Akbar as its new chief financial officer with effect from February 2027.

Akbar joins B&M from Asda, where he is currently vice president of Commercial Finance. Prior to Asda, Akbar led the retail and manufacturing finance functions at Morrisons before being appointed as a finance director in 2021. He has also held senior finance roles at Tesco PLC.

‘His strong commercial background in UK retail will be a great asset as we bring about change to deepen the financial foundations of our business,’ said B&M Chief Executive Tjeerd Jegen.

In April, Interim Chief Financial Officer Helen Cowing stepped down from her role, having only been in the position since last December. Cowing, formerly interim CFO at Mobico Group PLC, had replaced Mike Schmidt, who stepped down last October in the wake of an accounting error. In the wake of Cowing’s departure, Group Financial Controller Peter Waterhouse was appointed as interim CFO.

Shares in the Jersey-based variety goods chain in the UK and France were up 0.7% at 188.00 pence each in London on Wednesday morning.
