IN BRIEF: Powerhouse Energy signs LOI for waste-to-energy initiative

Powerhouse Energy Group PLC - UK-based waste-to-energy technology developer - Signs letter of intent with the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus and CSE Partnership to collaborate on the proposed establishment of a waste-to-energy testing centre in Antigua and Barbuda. The proposed initiative will combine UWI's academic research, Powerhouse's technology and CSE's regional partnerships to investigate waste, environmental and energy challenges facing Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean. A particular focus would be sargassum seaweed. The long-term aim is to develop Antigua and Barbuda into a place where Caribbean waste streams can be researched, tested and evaluated. The scheme is intended to be supported by external funding. The parties hope the research could "contribute to discussions around sustainable waste management, circular-economy development, energy resilience and climate adaptation in island communities internationally", Powerhouse Energy says. Next steps involve developing a proposed research framework, identifying research objectives, considering technical requirements and engaging with relevant stakeholders. Powerhouse Chair David Hitchcock said: "Subject to securing the necessary funding and agreeing definitive arrangements, our ambition is to help develop a platform that could have relevance not only for Antigua and Barbuda, but potentially for communities throughout the Caribbean and other island states facing similar challenges."
