British American Tobacco CFO Soraya Benchikh suddenly steps down

British American Tobacco PLC on Tuesday announced that Soraya Benchikh has resigned with immediate effect after a short stint.

The London-based cigarette and nicotine product maker said Benchikh will support the transition until December 31, 2025. No reason was given for her sudden resignation.

Javed Iqbal, who is director of digital & information, will again act as an interim chief financial officer.

Benchikh became the CFO from May 2024, taking over from Iqbal, who had served as interim finance director between May 2023 and April 2024.

BAT said it has launched a recruitment process to identify a permanent chief financial officer.

‘Soraya has made a significant contribution to BAT, having worked in various roles within the Group over many years,’ BAT Chief Executive Officer Tadeu Marroco said, adding: ‘We wish her all the best with her future plans.’

Benchikh had been president of Europe at Diageo PLC from January 2023. She previously spent 20 years at BAT where she served as president of BAT France, area director for East & Southern Africa, and regional finance director for Europe.

‘As we set out at our recent results, our performance in the first half of the year was slightly ahead of our expectations, and we are firmly on track to deliver our full year guidance,’ Marroco said. BAT released its interim financial results late last month.
