How to buy shares in SpaceX

Investors are keenly awaiting the potential stock market debut of Elon Musk’s rocket and satellite broadband group SpaceX.

Speculation is only building in intensity after SpaceX agreed a deal to acquire another part of Elon Musk's corporate empire in xAI, which encompasses both the social media platform X and the Grok artificial intelligence platform. A merger with Tesla has also been rumoured.

Reporting suggests SpaceX has appointed advisers as part of broader preparation to list the company’s shares on a stock market this summer.

This would almost certainly be the largest IPO in history in terms of the amount of money raised. An IPO or initial public offering is the first sale of a company’s shares on the stock market. Businesses typically go down this route as a means of raising money to invest for future growth.

SpaceX is one of several blockbuster stock market listings expected to happen in 2026 – also including ChatGPT owner OpenAI.

How do I buy shares in SpaceX?

If SpaceX confirms plans to float on a stock market, it may open its IPO offer to the public or restrict it to institutional investors. Given that it hasn’t officially announced its IPO, we do not have any details on any offer.

If it does open the IPO offer up to the public, ordinary investors in the US will be able to apply for shares at the IPO price. US regulations prevent UK investors from participating in any new issues on Wall Street, so it will be a case of waiting until the shares start trading on the market to buy them.

However, we have an IPO page that details other upcoming IPOs and new issues. AJ Bell customers can register to be notified of any new offers via email by updating your communication preferences. Simply toggle on the ‘Initial public offering (IPOs) and other new share and bond offer notifications’ from the list of options.

There are a handful of investment trusts on the UK stock market which already have material exposure to SpaceX. The company accounts for 15.2% and 16% respectively of the Scottish Mortgage and Edinburgh Worldwide portfolios.

Baillie Gifford US Growth and The Schiehallion Fund in turn have positions of 11.4% and 13.8 % (as a proportion of their portfolio).

Anyone investing in these trusts to gain access to SpaceX must consider performance will also be driven by the other holdings in their portfolio.

What does SpaceX do?

While better known for its status as a developer of commercial rockets for space exploration, SpaceX makes most of its money from its Starlink satellite internet service.

How much money does SpaceX make?

As a private company, SpaceX does not publish full financial results but a previous estimate from consultancy Quilty Space suggested it might make $11.8 billion revenue from Starlink in 2025 thanks to demand from consumers and contracts with the US military.

How much is SpaceX worth?

Talks were reportedly held in December 2025 over a private share sale in SpaceX that valued the business at $800 billion. The subsequent deal between SpaceX and xAI in February 2026 valued the combined entity at $1.25 trillion according to reports. The valuation at IPO will ultimately depend on investor demand.

The largest IPO on record took place in Riyadh in 2019 when Saudi Arabian national oil company Saudi Aramco joined the stock market with a $1.7 trillion valuation and raised $29.4 billion.

What is the date of the SpaceX IPO?

There is no date for the SpaceX IPO, but Elon Musk has confirmed an intention to float the company on a stock market in 2026. There has also been speculation that Musk will target a June listing to coincide with his birthday and the rare close alignment of the planets Jupiter, Venus and Mercury.

A lot will depend on what’s happening with stock markets in general, as IPOs often get delayed if shares are going through a difficult patch.
